I've been told before, that weddings can be a pretty daunting ceremony for some people... Are you telling me a wedding is basically a real-life horror movie for some folks?
Maybe this is because they might be unfamiliar with the way weddings work? If this is you, let me shed some light into this "horror movie" experience, and help you see a better side of these wonderful ceremonies.
So let me explain a little bit about the anatomy of a wedding, it is all pretty simple really. Now, every minister has a script they follow during the ceremony, it can be a generic one, or one they have personalized according to what the couple has desired. SO let's start dissecting this wedding!
Processional
This is just a fancy way to say, "Here comes the Bride!"
During this first part of the ceremony, we see the wedding party arriving, their big hour is here and we are all gathered together to be witnesses of their fantastic union!
Opening remarks
This is the part where the amazing minister (ehemm...your truly) begins the ceremony, and welcomes everyone to the most expected ceremony of the year! During this part, the minister gives a speech, depending on what the couple has wanted, it can be a custom made speech filled with funny or heart-felt memories from the couple. This part can make or break the ceremony, depending on the minister the couple has chosen, and it doesn't have to be a professional! It can be a family or friend of the couple, as long as the person takes this role seriously, the ceremony will be amazing!
Readings
This is the part where the couple can have any ceremonies or traditions, they would like in their wedding. From a sand ritual (where the bride and the groom have a glass filled with sand - it can be different colors to make it fun!- and they both fill an empty jar,, representing their lifelong commitment and love for each other). The couple can also have their family and/or friend come to the altar and deliver a speech or a poem too!
Vows exchange/Declaration of intent
This is very simple, it can be the most heart felt event for the bride and groom; this is the moment they get to talk to each other during the ceremony, a moment where they both say out loud their eternal promises to each other. A moment where they confess their love for each other, to the world. Each couple is different, whatever they write for their vows, is a personal touch, with the help of their minister, family or friends, they can make this moment, a truly magical one for their beloved, (I personally think this is the most important job for the bride and groom).
Rings
Why a ring? A ring is a symbol, the circle that never ends, just like the couple's love for each other that will never end. So, the exchange of the rings during the ceremony, is basically a way to symbolize their love for each other, forever.
Pronouncement
"You may kiss the bride!" Those are such exciting words to say! The moment we all have been waiting for, the moment where a couple has finally come together in their ceremony, a moment I am sure the groom has been waiting for anxiously! This is also the time to introduce the lovely couple as husband a wife!
Recessional/Closing Statement
You see? Now we are at the end, this is the part where the minister thanks you for coming, we watch the happy couple exit the area, and then we all follow them out!
So now, what do you think? Are you ready for a wedding? Or is it still... a bit daunting?
